PALM SUNDAY MARCH 16: PEACE MARCH AND FREE CONCERT

Five years since Iraq: It's time for Australia to lead in peace - not war

A community rally including church, trade union, student, environment, peace and anti-nuclear groups will be held in Melbourne on Palm Sunday, the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

The Melbourne action is a part of activities happening around Australia on Palm Sunday - a day with a long tradition of peace building.

The rally will highlight the high cost of Australia's military involvement in both Iraq and Afghanistan and the continuing conflict and denial of human rights in Palestine.

Australia's involvement in the controversial nuclear trade - both as a major uranium exporter and through mooted support for the provocative US missile defence program - will also be in focus.

"We are expecting a vibrant march full of families, color and music," said rally organiser Jessica Morrison. "Palm Sunday peace rallies have always provided an opportunity for people to make a call and take a step for peace - in 2008 this message is as important as ever."
