Dear all,
As part of a conference being put on at RMIT's Hamilton campus, the
Globalism Research Centre (which I work for) has brought over to Australia a
particularly ace activist from Ecuador - Carlos Zorilla - who's been
organising community resistance to large-scale mining in the Intag region of
Northern Ecuador, home to the very precious cloud forests. The community
resistance and direct action against the proposed copper mine has been
largely successful to date, but the struggle is still continuing.
Because we didn't want Carlos to come over here just to talk to a bunch of
champagne lefty academics, a couple of us have teamed up with Lasnet (Latin
American Solidarity Network) and Friends of the Earth to organise a public
talk and some other events to allow Carlos to talk to, and with, other
activists. Also present will be Glen Kuecker, founder of the Intag
Solidarity Network and Professor of Latin American History at De Pauw
University in the US.
So, it would be really fantastic if people came along to one or both of the
events on next week:
On Monday 23rd, Lasnet is organising a 'tertulia', or get-together, at 7pm
at the FoE office on Smith St. There will be talking and drinking and eating
and (maybe) dancing, and it'll be a great chance to show solidarity with an
important struggle in the region. If you'd like to come please RSVP to
Lucho at riquelmel at bigpond.com, or 0400 914 944 so we can organise food and
drinks (feel free to bring your own drinks).
Then on Tuesday night (24th June, 6pm at Trades Hall), Carlos and Glen will
be talking at Trades Hall, in the Bella Union bar (see poster attached), on
the theme of "Defending Community and Ecology in Ecuador".

Hope to see you all there,
x Tori
