Perspectives from Canada, the US and Australia
Forum on 5 June 6:00pm, Law Building, University of Melbourne


 

Featuring international speakers Kent McNeil 'Indigneous self-government in Canada', Robert Miller 'The Doctrine of Discovery, international law and American Indians' and smoking ceremony and introduction by Robbie Thorpe. Chaired by Karen Jackson, Commissioner of the Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, and presented by ANTaR Victoria with the support of Reconciliation Victoria, and the Human Rights Forum (University of Melbourne). In association with the  New Worlds New Sovereignties Conference (6-9 June 2008), cohosted by VALS and the School of Political Science, Criminology and Sociology, University of Melbourne.



The smoking ceremony will take place at 6:00pm on University Square (Q15 on the map).The forum will begin at 6:30pm, Room G08 in the Law Building.  Fingerfood will be served at the ceremony. Further information on the speakers

Robert J. Miller is a professor at Lewis & Clark Law School in the U.S.A. He is the Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals for the Grand Ronde Tribe. His book, Native America, Discovered and Conquered, was published in hardback in September 2006, and released in paperback in April 2008 from the University of Nebraska Press. Kent McNeil is a Distinguished Research Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, teaching Property Law, First Nations and the Law, and Trusts. His primary research interest is the rights of Indigenous peoples, particularly in Canada, Australia and the United States. http://www.osgoode.yorku.ca/faculty/McNeil_C_Kent.html



Conducting a smoking ceremony and offering opening remarks is Robbie Thorpe - a Gunai/Mara man and strong advocate for Indigenous rights. He was spokesman for the high profile community protests staged by the Black GST and Camp Sovereignty at the 2006 'Stolenwealth' Games. His work to expose Australia's genocidal character has involved bringing litigation against numerous high-ranking government officials. Robbie hosts a weekly radio program on 3CR.



Chairing the forum is Karen Jackson - a Yorta Yorta, Barap Barap woman who is strongly committed to Indigenous issues, particularly in Victoria. She is a Commissioner of the Victorian human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and the Indigenous Services Programs Officer at Victoria University of Technology.
