"Against the love of death and For the love of life"
First Activist Solidarity Gathering (Encuentro)
In Solidarity with Latin American and Australian (Asia Pacific)
Struggles and Resistance against Neoliberalism
Saturday July 28, 2007
Melbourne - Australia
Our one day Activists Solidarity Gathering will take place next July 28th at MUA offices, 54 Ireland Street, West Melbourne, Victoria, from 9am to 5pm.
Australian grassroots solidarity activists will be joined by activists and organisers from Latin America and Australia and other part of Asia pacific region to plan, evaluate and celebrate the growing of Latin America and Asia Pacific solidarity movement in Australia.
The Americas have a strong legacy of resistance. From the Mapuche struggle for land and autonomy against the conquistadors to the successful fight to force U.S.-owned Occidental Petroleum out of Ecuador earlier this year; from Simon Bolivar's struggle for freedom from Spain and slavery to the Cuban, Sandinistas, and modern day Bolivarian process for changes, the Zapatista alternative from below and to the left, the social grass- roots movements in Bolivia which face privatizations policies and challenge the state.Brazil MST talking about new times of fights and the CONAIE the national indigenous organization from Ecuador facing new challenges defending their rights. No decade has passed without seeing people coming together to fight subjugation. Millions of Latin Americans, dispossessed by Neoliberal Capitalism, imperialist looting, militarization and repression are defying the racist system of violence and domination with increasing frequency and effectiveness. Popular movements are gaining influence throughout the hemisphere.
Participants in our Activists Solidarity Gathering will exchange information on the state of the campaigns against military, political, and economic global capitalism intervention in Latin America and develop action plans. Art and culture, which is an integral part of grassroots movement building throughout the Americas, will be a strong component of our one day gathering. Carlos Castro from People's Assembly Movement from Chile and a Maori Activist from Aotearoa (NZ) will share their experiences and histories in their struggle against neoliberalism.
The First Activists Solidarity Gathering will be a space for reflection and discussion about vision, planning, and building working links with workshops, featuring activists with decades of experience addressing some of the most pressing issues on building social movements. Where do we want to go and how do we plan to get there? What does it mean to be anti-capitalist in terms of our daily practice? How do we implement thoughts and practices that challenge current power structures without falling into conformist and unfinished negotiations trap? How do we build multi-cultural, multi-ethnic movements? And with your input much more.
