Subject: Shadowy Figures in Fiji Coups - Shamima Ali Speaks up
New Year Greetings,
Posted below is an interesting take on a backdrop to the Fiji coup, by the TIME magazine. It explored the links between current military and Fiji leader, Bainimarama, the Hotel Industry in Fiji and Australia. A follow-up commentary on this article was posted by the Fiji Daily Post on 29 Dec 2006. It introduced the commentary with the line that "there has been much speculation...as to the role of shadowy figures behind Frank Bainimarama's coup". The commentary went on to add to those links highlighted in TIME magazine another possible Australia-Fiji link, the legal firm Holding Redlich. http://www.fijidailypost.com/feature.php
For the latest on civil society's role in Fiji, read Shamima Ali's interview by the Fiji Times 1 Jan 2007, "When the Going Gets Tough". http://www.fijitimes.com/story.aspx?id=54426
At a time when the Director of Fiji Human Rights Commission, Dr Shaista Shameem, and some leading Human Rights NGOs are at loggerheads, on the relationship between the Commission, the Military and Human Rights, Ms Ali, Coordinator of the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre and also a Human Rights Commissioner herself takes the middle and moral high ground in calling for constitutional solution and the respect for human rights. She does not stops there. She calls on the military to be consistent in its motto of "clean up campaign" by conducting its affairs in open and inclusive governance. In this vein she calls for NGO leaders not to abandon their core purpose of speaking up on behalf of the people. Ms Ali in her previous public statements condemned the military overthrow of the elected Qarase led Fiji government.
